What Is a Vehicle Recall?

A vehicle recall is when a manufacturer determines that a vehicle, equipment, car seat, or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards. Recalls are issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Recall repairs are always free. The manufacturer pays for everything. If a shop tries to charge you for a recall repair, walk out.

You can find your 17-character VIN on your driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), on your driver's side door jamb, or on your vehicle registration and insurance documents.
