Airbag Light On — What the SRS Warning Means for Your Safety

By Anthony Calhoun, ASE Master Technician11 min read
Airbag Light (SRS Light) — the Supplemental Restraint System warning light indicates a fault in your vehicle's airbag system. When this light is on, your airbags may not deploy in a crash. This is a safety-critical warning.

I'm Anthony Calhoun, and in 25 years as an ASE Master Technician, the airbag light is one I take seriously every time. Unlike a check engine light that might be a loose gas cap, the airbag light means your crash protection system has a problem. If you get in an accident with this light on, your airbags may not fire.

Let me walk you through what causes it, what to do about it, and what it's going to cost.

What the SRS System Actually Does

SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System. It includes your airbags (front, side, curtain, and knee), the crash sensors mounted around the vehicle, the seat belt pretensioners, and the airbag control module that ties everything together.

When you turn the key on, the SRS module runs a self-test. If everything checks out, the airbag light turns off after a few seconds. If the light stays on or comes on while driving, the module found a problem and is telling you the system may not work when you need it most.

Common Causes of an Airbag Light

Clock Spring Failure

The clock spring is a ribbon cable inside the steering column that maintains the electrical connection to the driver's airbag while you turn the wheel. It wears out over time — especially on vehicles with high mileage. This is the most common cause I see, particularly on Honda, Toyota, and Nissan vehicles with 80,000+ miles. Symptoms include the airbag light plus horn and steering wheel controls not working.

Seat Belt Buckle Sensor

The buckle sensor tells the SRS module whether the seat belt is fastened. Spilled drinks, crumbs, and general wear can damage the sensor inside the buckle. I see this constantly on vehicles with kids — juice boxes and the seat belt buckle are natural enemies.

Wiring Under the Seats

There are wiring connectors under the front seats for the seat-mounted side airbags and the occupant classification sensor. Sliding objects under the seat, adjusting the seat, or even vacuuming can unplug or damage these connectors. On a 2019 Toyota Camry I worked on, a water bottle wedged under the passenger seat had pulled the connector loose.

Airbag Control Module

The module itself can fail, especially after water exposure. Vehicles that have been through flooding or even minor water intrusion (from a leaking sunroof drain, for example) often develop SRS module problems because the module is typically mounted low — under the center console or under a front seat.

Previous Accident

If the vehicle was in a collision and the airbags were replaced, the SRS module needs to be reset or replaced. Crash data is stored in the module. If the shop that did the repair didn't clear the crash data or the module wasn't properly coded, the light stays on.

Is It Safe to Drive?

The car will drive and stop normally. The engine, transmission, and brakes are not affected by the airbag system. But here's the reality: you have no airbag protection while this light is on.

That means in a collision, the airbags will likely not deploy. The seat belt pretensioners may not fire. You're relying on just the seat belt and the vehicle's structural design to protect you.

Can you drive to the shop? Yes. Should you drive around for weeks or months ignoring it? Absolutely not. This is a safety system, and it exists to save your life in a crash. How It's Diagnosed

An SRS-capable scan tool reads the specific fault code from the airbag control module. A basic $30 OBD2 scanner from the auto parts store cannot read these codes — SRS is a separate system from the engine computer.

Common codes include B-codes (body codes) that point to specific components: B0051 for the driver's frontal airbag circuit, B0081 for the passenger side, B0092-B0095 for side airbags, and so on. The code tells the technician exactly which circuit has the fault.

Why DIY Is Risky Here

I do not recommend DIY work on the airbag system. Airbags are explosives — literally. They use a chemical propellant charge to inflate in milliseconds. An accidental deployment can cause serious injury or death. Professional technicians disable the system, disconnect the battery, and wait for capacitors to discharge before touching any SRS component.

If you want to check the connector under the seat, disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes before reaching under there. But for anything beyond a visual inspection, take it to a shop.
